Bus Stop Protocol (no Yes approach here)
As guests at Earl Warren Showgrounds all SBMS families agree their children will not play outside the personnel offices; children won’t run around on the grass area in front of the offices; SBMS children will not explore in the patio area behind the offices; children will not be loose in the parking lot, and that every effort will be taken to avoid using the EWS offices’ restroom facilities, right? Please, if you have questions, HOS can provide answers…I’m here for you.
The EWS personnel are doing us a favor, a huge favor, based upon long-standing friendships and Santa Barbara-style local connections…they can pull the plug, and if our plug is pulled…where do we go? Please, our courtesy and appreciation for their good neighbor efforts need to be preserved. EWS is not a playground, it’s not a play area, it’s a place of business. Mackenzie Park is at the end of the street. Play. Run. Jump. Explore…just do it at the park, not at EWS!
Seth Godin likes it: No Lizard Brains
As a longtime admirer and reader of Seth Godin (Linchpin; Tribes; Purple Cow), SBMS HOS was surprised to open a personal email from Seth this afternoon. Two weeks ago Godin had supplied a graphic of a lizard and invited his readers to use it, thus the attached ad was shared with Godin and his response, “Gotta love this, Jim!” See for yourself and decide whether lizard brains (amygdala) are important.
Campus Grace and Courtesy
SBMS’s Parent Handbook / Directory (years in development) features on page 38 guidelines for parent interaction with each other, with teachers, and with children while on SBMS’s wonderful campus. Last week SBMS’s Rugby team was treated to the experience of what can happen when adults from outside the SBMS community fail in their efforts to communicate in ways consistent with Grace and Courtesy.
Despite the school’s and the staff’s efforts to provide clear information moment to moment and throughout the school year, there are occasions when SBMS parents find themselves wondering…in a quandary…with questions…with concerns. Yes?
By relooking at page 38, by following these guidelines and suggestions, and by following direct lines of communication there seems great likelihood that simple and or complex quandaries, concerns, and questions can be answered and or resolved. Yes.
One of the most significant details of SBMS’s ‘culture’ is its ongoing attempt to simplify and beautify. There is but one office. There is but one on the school’s administrative staff, and there is but one CEO / CFO / HOS. It’s not that it’s important to wear more than one hat at SBMS, it’s more that responsibility and decision making goes hand in hand with the daily activities of the guides in the classrooms, and those responsible for the school’s business. Efficiency is SBMS’s middle name, is it not?
SBMS’s operation is simple by design. It’s simple because it doesn’t need to be complicated. Nonetheless, there is great complexity to what SBMS accomplishes each day, and one of the most important responsibilities we all share, is to help each other—families, parents and children, and teachers and administrators—to develop deeper understanding about the complex world we all share.
As we know, “…there are no passengers on spaceship earth, only crew…”
If you feel there is something, large, small, weird, detailed or otherwise troubling or concerning, please; SBMS’s community of Grace and Courtesy is ready to address, respond, cajole, explain, and work with individuals, families, parents and children, to better understand how the school and its component parts can grow and learn together.
