2009-2010 Annual Giving Campaign

Wow. Success begins. Already at 21% participation, we've reached 25% of our goal! Incredible. Thank you to those already able to make their tax-deductible donation...Seth Godin says, One hundred percent participation is a necessary goal in your situation if you accept the basic principle that money is more than a transfer of value, it's a statement of belief. Here's to believing!

100% Believing in SBMS

Turns out SBMS's goal of 100% Participation is not the norm. Other schools 'accept' lesser participation because, well, because that's what they do. Maybe they don't believe? We believe. SBMS's community, however, knows that as important as the donations are to the school's survival and success, each donation is an affirmation of the BELIEF in SBMS. Isn't your child's school the best? Believe it.

Holiday Program Dec. 17; 6:30pm

SBMS's Alumni Hall

Willy Wonka morphs to Willi, and with tweaks and musical twists the story unfolds. Not forgetting the tragic circumstances of Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal's son, Theo (who the book is dedicated to), and his challenges after he was struck by a car in NYC. In fact, Rudy Schulte and Roald Dahl worked to develop brain shunts separately, and while Dahl continued writing, Schulte joined with Ted Heyer to create a whole industry, and as a result he purchased Rancho Dos Pueblos...as Oscar and Aidan might say, "Interesting...Fascinating..."

Costume Workshop @ SBMS

Thurs. Dec. 10 & Fri. Dec. 11; Noon to 5:00pm Sewing machines. Glue guns. Assembly lines. Either day, or both (RSVP). The children's work cycle in the morning remains intact as the afternoons lean in the direction of rehearsals. Please RSVP if you're able to join in the creativity! Be sure to schedule any ADM you may need for your child.

Alumni Update

Several past SBMS thespians are 'moving' along; Devin Thomas graduates from UC Berkeley this month before departing for Bangladesh on a six month Peace Corps-like stint; John Allen graduates from Hamilton in January-John just finished starring in a Moliere play before visiting SBMS last week, and after appearing in stand-up comedy clubs in NYC over the summer; Gina Castagnola is studying in Australia while learning to play their football (not Rugby); and Ashley Jackson has taken a management position at the Ritz-Carlton in North Tahoe after graduating from SDSU earlier this year. Not forgetting Trevor Angell is now known as, after graduating from USC Medical School earlier this year, Dr. Angell! Trevor's younger brother, Max, is attending SFSU along with his roommate and SBMS classmate, Danny Wilson. And, Chaitanya Mehra, Princeton 2002, survived the cuts at Goldman Sachs, retaining his position there and now looks forward to meeting up with this year's SBMS crew that will be visiting the Montessori Model UN in January. There's more...next time.

Alumni Hall Donor Wall

This year's Annual Giving Fund donors will be recognized with a plaque added to the Donor Wall in the multi-purpose room...in fact, the plaques from 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 are all (finally!) being designed and created at Tri-Valley Trophy for installation in early 2010. As in the past, donors are also recognized in the FFF, and importantly the goal of 100% participation will be reiterated over the coming weeks. Partners in learning, we are. Partners in believing.

Kid Kafe Interruptus

December 17 will mark the end or our lunch program service provided by Rincon Catering. Until further notice SBMS children will again be bringing their own lunches from home each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with the option of enjoying Pasta on Mondays, and Pizza on Fridays. For the immediate future the SBMS kitchen will be closed down until its final remodeling is completed and new food service is established.

Pasta Mondays and Friday Pizza will continue uninterrupted (look for sign-up information next week).

As you may know, Kid Kafe has traditionally been a key business component of the Erdkinder program, with the junior high students organizing and running the food service for their fellow classmates. The business has always been intended to be profitable, nutritional, and educational. In fact, profits from the Kid Kafe are distributed to the students who volunteer to work in the program; the profits help offset travel costs to Italy and NYC. As of November 1 new food service permit requirements, and subsequent kitchen remodel to meet the new statutes, have made the attempted collaboration with Rincon Catering un-sustainable.

What is sustainable, for now, is the joy and collaboration of creating nutritional lunches with your children, at home, for their enjoyment at school. Delicious food, that your children help prepare, in reusable containers from home, can make for a wonderfully nutritious and sustainable experience for everyone. The whole experience can include your children, from menu planning, to shopping and preparation, and then once at school the children will still serve their lunches at their place settings-the established culture of the lunch experience will continue, it's more that on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, your child's lunch will come from your home. Questions? Recipe ideas: Chef Jim can help.

Sign-Ups of 2010

Sign-Up forms for Afterschool Classes, and Pasta and Pizza, will be available next week. Pasta will be served on Monday, January 4, 2010, when we come back to school 'next year.' Be sure to return forms in a timely fashion in order to assure your child their place in the After School Classes.

Online Auction Update (The Other 100% Challenge)

Many thanks and appreciation for the many of you able to already provide up to three items for donation to the Online Auction. Speedy volunteers have been cataloging items, and preparing the necessary information and photographs that will contribute to the Online Auction's success. If you have items outstanding, or need help in collecting items that are being donated, contact: Kim Davis at SBMS. Hundreds of donations have already been collected, but at this point only 23% of SBMS families have turned in their donations.
