Summer Sessions Update

Kira / Grace / Audrey

Under the direction of Toddler Community Guide; Rosa Hopkins, Toddlers are enjoying the attentions of SBMS Erdkinder students; Grace Strelich, Kira Hopkins, and Audrey Heffernan. Classroom activities, rides in the wagons, and strolls around the campus, continue to be popular activities. Siri sat in one of the red wagons with Grace pulling her along; Siri glanced in our direction, and then turned back to Grace knowing some new adventure was coming right up.

Allwyn’s Elementary Games session wrapped up on Friday with serious World Cup-inspired football (soccer), before heading out to UCSB for a wrap up at the beach. The ‘football’ included a variety of teams selected randomly with an attempt toward parity. It should be noted, however, when Thomas Macquet is on your team you’re likely to win. Even though winning is not important nor stressed, there was more than one player who asked, “Why is Thomas always on the winning team?” He may have to start wearing number 10. There have been no diablos rijos this year at the beach, but yesterday did feature a rather large crab that came ashore while we were swimming. With missing limbs it was obvious it had had a rough day, so we placed it gently in our Jacuzzi before leaving.

Camping Trip update:

What to bring? What to pack? ‘Minimal’ is the theme. Campers will need a backpack/daypack that will hold their travel lunch for the first day; sleeping bag; small pillow; layered clothing—more layers in the morning, fewer layers later in the day, and then a return to more layers in the evening; one layer must be a rain ‘shedder’—coat/poncho/jacket/hat; Swim beach wear (board shorts; suit; rash guards; UV clothing); Beach shoes. Sturdy shoes. Toiletries. Basic stuff.

Campers MUST pack their bags so they know what’s in their bag—essential option to: “My mom didn’t pack it.” “My mom forgot to pack it.” “My dad didn’t put it in my bag.” Moms and or dads must make sure the basics are included, it’s necessary to avoid, “My mom didn’t tell me.” “My dad said I didn’t need it.”

Detailed email to follow early next week.

Meanwhile, Allwyn Fitzpatrick is now in NYC for more ‘diplomat’ training with the MMUN. As a result of the training she’ll further increase the role of SBMS students in future MMUN experiences, especially next spring when SBMS’s Erdkinder class returns to NYC and Washington, DC.

In July is the Montessori Administrators Association 2010 retreat and workshop in Point Loma, CA. MAA VP, Jim Fitzpatrick, is continuing to hone his presentation to the MAA group. His intention is to simplify the concept of the celebration to a level of understanding that can be understood by all, thus assuring more schools will be able to participate.
